New skills have been learned, adventures have been had, and new memories have been formed. This summer has been nothing short of transformational. From the relationships I built through the Frank Karel Fellowship to the experiences I gained during my time with the National League of Cities, I am walking away from this experience with a greater sense of purpose, confidence, and excitement for what lies ahead.
When I began this summer, I knew I wanted to grow as a journalist and communicator, but I did not fully understand just how much this experience would challenge me to expand the way I think about storytelling. My time with the National League of Cities gave me the opportunity to work on projects that pushed me beyond the traditional idea of journalism. I wrote blogs and press releases, developed social media content, contributed to communications projects, and learned how storytelling can help people better understand the issues impacting their communities.
One of the biggest lessons I will take away from this experience is that storytelling exists everywhere. Whether you are covering entertainment, politics, education, business, or local government, there are people and stories that deserve to be heard. My experience at NLC showed me how communications can connect complex issues to the people they impact most. It reminded me that being a strong storyteller is not simply about writing well; it is about understanding your audience, asking the right questions, listening to different perspectives, and finding ways to make information meaningful.
Beyond the professional experience, the people I met throughout the Frank Karel Fellowship made this summer especially meaningful. Being surrounded by other young professionals who were eager to learn, create, and grow allowed me to build relationships that I know will extend far beyond this summer. Every conversation, piece of advice, and shared experience contributed to my growth in some way. I am grateful to have been part of a community that encouraged me to dream bigger while also reminding me of the importance of staying true to who I am.
This summer also gave me the opportunity to see myself differently. I entered the fellowship knowing that I wanted to pursue a career in journalism and media, but I am leaving with a clearer understanding of the type of storyteller I want to become. I want to use my voice and platform to tell stories that matter, amplify voices that are often overlooked, and connect people to information in ways that are engaging and impactful.
As I prepare to return to Morehouse College for my senior year, I know that I will carry this experience with me into the classroom, my campus involvement, and the next chapter of my career. The lessons I learned, the skills I developed, and the relationships I formed will continue to shape how I approach opportunities moving forward.
The end of this summer does not feel like an ending. Instead, it feels like the beginning of a new chapter. The Frank Karel Fellowship and my time at the National League of Cities gave me more than professional experience—they gave me memories, relationships, confidence, and a stronger sense of direction.
I am incredibly grateful for everyone who played a role in making this summer possible. As I close this chapter, I am excited to take everything I have learned and use it to continue growing, creating, and telling stories that make an impact.
Here’s to the lessons learned, the memories made, the people who became part of the journey, and whatever comes next.
